Growing Fairness: Social Justice Film Screening

  • WeWork Nomad 27 East 28th Street New York, NY, 10016 United States

During the month of July, Faith in New York, is organizing faith communities around NYC to participate in a letter writing campaign to support a bill that will help move all schools in New York to embrace approaches to school discipline that adopt best practices, keep schoolchildren in school, and eliminate racial inequities that are driving negative academic outcomes for students of color. The legislation will create strong state policies that support schools in building the skills and capacities of students and adults to constructively resolve conflict, and create learning environments that value every person. At Forefront we believe in a just school system and safe discipline practices where every child has the chance to thrive as God created them.

In addressing this social justice issue, we're screening a short documentary film (44 min.) called GROWING FAIRNESS about “growing” restorative justice practices in public schools in New York City and Oakland, CA. Often, passionate educators lead these cultural shifts in schools. Growing Fairness examines the historical and political context for their resistance against the norm. It also shares the voices of youth who have seized the opportunity to lead, transforming their schools and themselves in the process. Check out the trailer below.

Join us at WeWork for a short screening and discussion on the issue and to learn more about how you can support the FINY letter writing campaign with us. Beer, coffee, tea and popcorn will be served with the movie. Screening begins at 7:00pm. Please RSVP to reserve a spot. All are welcome.

If you cannot join us for the screening, but would like to participate in writing to our local representatives, you can find a form letter to print and mail below.
